Amanda Redman MBE
Amanda is one of the UK’s best loved actors, appearing in film, television and stage, ranging from period dramas to comedies, gangster films to Shakespeare.
When Amanda was 15 months old she was accidently scalded in the kitchen with a pan of boiling soup.
She suffered severe injuries which left her with 3rd degree burns to 75% of her body. and the trauma of Amanda’s injury was so severe that at one point she was pronounced clinically dead.
Amanda was treated at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead and needed a number of operations as she grew up, to heal her injuries. Now, the only part of her body which is still affected is her left arm, where scars run from her shoulder to her elbow.
" Like everyone else involved, I was very happy when, in 2010, legislation was introduced to ensure the installation of Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMVs) in new homes.
However, statistics continue to show the shocking number of people of all ages badly scalded each year by tap water. The fact is that the majority of us live in older properties, and therefore have no protection from this law. We are effectively at risk every time we turn on the hot water tap – this is especially so for children and the elderly.
The risk of legionalla is the reason why our hot water has to be stored at high levels – but in this day and age there are relatively simple ways of ensuring that the water is delivered at a safe temperature into our sink or bath, and that both the risk of disease and the risk of scalding can be addressed and overcome.
As patron of the Children’s Burns Trust I was delighted to learn of the latest Hot Water Burns Like Fire Campaign; it is particularly heartening to see industrial, academic, medical, regulatory and social organisations working together to raise awareness and work towards a solution.
I know only too well the pain, both physical and psychological, of scalding – the life long implications of an accident that occurred in an instant.
I am delighted to endorse the Hot Water Burns Life Fire Campaign – and hope that after exploring this excellent website you will agree! "
