It happens in an instant
Imagine a parent filling a bath for a toddler ...
Despite advice to run the cold water first and then top up with hot it is really common for the hot tap to be turned on first and then the temperature is adjusted by adding cold afterwards.
" Suddenly the doorbell rings, the phone goes, or the parent is distracted by another child and leaves the bathroom for a few seconds.
The child reaches in to grab their favourite toy, or jumps into the bath thinking it is ready, and falls headfirst into the 60ºC hot water.
The child will probably raise the alarm loudly enough and the parent may have the child out of the water in a matter of seconds.
But, unfortunately, it is far too late. "
Hot water at 60ºC will result in virtually instantaneous third degree burns to all those parts of the body it touches
